Grade 8 Photos: HOW IT WORKS:
- For a classic look, we recommend students wear a white collared shirt with a tie, but if that’s not your style, wear something that makes you feel great!
Following physical distancing procedures, your photographer will take 4 photos of you on 2 backgrounds.
REMEMBER THE WHOLE CLASS
- In addition to your portrait session you will receive an 8x10 class composite.
- If you would like to upgrade to an 11x14 class composite with embossed hard cover folder you can place your order online at https://products.edgeimaging.ca/composites/order/SNN The folder has a place for you to also keep your graduation certificate. Your folder must be purchased before photo order due date so order now.
Grade 8 Student Transition Profiles:
As students progress from elementary school to secondary school, important personal student information is shared, which eases each student’s transition to secondary school. Sharing this information also improves our ability to program effectively to benefit all students. The collection and use of personal student information for such purposes are authorized under the Education Act. Please note that all information used for the transition process is limited, secure, and protected at all times. Purdy’s Chocolate: The Purdys Chocolate online fundraiser is now up and running. Deadline to submit orders is March 15th. You will place your order directly with Purdy’s online. Pick up will be Monday, April 3, 2023, 3:30 to 6:30 pm at Sunnybrae PS. All proceeds will go towards much needed technology for the school.
Dental Screening: Dental staff from the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit will be providing FREE dental screenings for all students at Sunnybrae Public School on March 28, 29 & 30, 2023.
What is a dental screening?
• A dental screening is a safe and simple way to identify dental concerns. It is a quick visual look inside the mouth using a sterile, single use, disposable dental mirror for each child. A screening does not replace an examination by a dentist.
• The dental screening is completed by a Registered Dental Hygienist and a Certified Dental Assistant. Our team prioritizes health and safety and follows current infection prevention and control guidelines. We will be asking students to perform hand hygiene and mask for dental screenings. For students who are unable to wear masks, accommodations will be arranged.
• Each screening takes approximately one minute or less.
Why are dental screenings provided in schools?
• To identify children in need of urgent dental treatment. Even if your child visits a dentist regularly, the screening can be helpful to identify dental concerns between regular dental examinations.
• To ensure children with urgent dental concerns receive the necessary treatment. • To provide information and to support access to the Healthy Smiles Ontario Program for eligible children and families.
• Screenings are required in accordance with the Ontario Public Health Standards under the Health Protection and Promotion Act (1990).
What happens after your child is screened?
• Every child screened will receive a Dental Report Card with their results.
• Children with urgent dental concerns will also receive a Parent Notification Form (PNF).
• If you receive a PNF please complete by selecting the option that applies to you and return forms in the postage-paid envelope provided.
• The Health Unit is required by the Child, Youth and Family Services Act, 2017 to ensure children with urgent dental concerns receive the necessary treatment.
Does my child have to participate?
• Participation in the dental screening program is optional.
• If you do not want your child to have a FREE dental screening, please fill out the School Dental Screening Non-Participation Form or call the health unit’s Dental Screening Program at 705-721-7520 or toll free 1-877-721-7520, extension 8342, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Please do not contact the school to make your request.
• Non-Participation requests must be received at least 2 business days before the scheduled date of the dental screening. There is a chance your child may be screened if we do not receive your request by the deadline indicated.
• Non-participation requests only apply to the child’s current school. If you have made a request in the past or your child has changed schools, please make a new request.

Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit
Evaluating early literacy: The Ministry of Education has directed all Ontario school boards to begin implementing the recommendations outlined in the Right to Read Inquiry. As a result, primary educators are shifting from using leveled texts for reading instruction as they encourage reliance on guessing strategies to solve unknown words. Instead, educators are beginning to use a scope and sequence to systematically teach phonemic awareness (awareness of the sounds in words) and phonics (understanding of the letters that represent sounds). Students may apply the phonics skills they have learned by reading ’decodable’ or ’phonetically controlled’ texts.
As a result, educators are moving away from using PM Benchmarks and moving towards assessments that measure foundational reading skills. For example, in Grade 1, educators will be observing a child’s ability to identify the sounds they hear in a word, identify the letter(s) that represent the sound, and their ability to blend the sounds together to decode (read) the word and encode (write) the word. In later primary, educators will be observing a child’s understanding of more complex letter/sound relationships such as prefixes and suffixes.
Educators will also consider a child’s achievement in reading fluency, vocabulary development, and reading comprehension when assigning a report card grade for reading.

Covid Screening: All students and staff are encouraged to complete the daily COVID-19 self-assessment screening tool
prior to entering SCDSB schools and buildings and follow the direction of the screening tool. We have some RA Test kits here at the school. If you need one for your family please let your child’s teacher know and we will send it home with them. School and Child Care Screening
