This Week at Sunnybrae PS – Feb. 5 to 9, 2024

Message from the Principal: Term 2 report cards will be sent home on February 16th.  “We know that parents have an important role to play in supporting student learning. Studies show that students perform better in school if their parents or guardians are involved in their education.” (Growing Success, p.8) To that end, teachers are reporting on their evaluation of student achievement based on the four categories of assessment which are:  Knowledge and Understanding, Thinking, Communication, and Application. Evaluation is based on the most recent and consistent demonstration of student learning and includes conversations, observations, and projects. “Treating all children exactly the same means that children who need accommodations or modifications to the program in order to succeed will be disadvantaged. Some students require more or different support than others in order to work at a level appropriate to their abilities and needs” (Education for All, p. 5). For some students, therefore, assessment, evaluation, and reporting will be based on modified expectations. Accommodation is provided to all students as needed. Students are encouraged to review their reports with parents and set goals for term 2 that could include improving their learning skills, attendance, or specific subjects. Please reach out to your child(ren)’s teacher(s) if you have any questions or concerns regarding the report card.

Winter Carnival-Feb. 9th

Our school is gearing up for an unforgettable event – the upcoming Winter Carnival based on Le Carnaval d’hiver in Quebec City.  Friday, February 9th we will transform our school yard into a winter wonderland filled with joy, laughter, and festive activities for students in Grades 1-8.  Our Kindergarten classes will have a Winter fun day celebration on a later date.

Please ensure your child is dressed warmly with layers, hats, gloves, snow pants and waterproof boots. Please send extra socks and mittens/gloves.  We want everyone to stay cozy and enjoy the festivities to the fullest.

Additionally, we are in search of enthusiastic parents who would like to contribute to the success of the Winter Carnival by volunteering.  If you are on the approved volunteer list and are available and willing to help out, please contact Danielle Shannon at [email protected].
