This Week at Sunnybrae PS – Feb. 26 to March 1, 2024

Principal’s Message:  Sunnybrae will recognize Pink Shirt Day on February 28th, 2024, to help create a more kind, inclusive world by raising awareness of anti-bullying initiatives. As a school, we have an anti-bullying team who are planning to use survey data including this year’s upcoming School Climate Survey and their own school-based survey to determine how best to build empathy for and understanding of the impact of bullying on children. Students are learning to identify bullying as repeated acts of aggression or coercion where there is an imbalance of power. Bullying is very common online where students can remain anonymous which makes it very difficult to address. Families can help by having conversations with their children about bullying and the importance of filtering their words and actions through the lens of, “Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it true?”  before speaking, typing, or acting. Thank you for your support!

  • Feb. 25th:  Last day to purchase Barrie Colts tickets for March 7th game.

Rainbows Support Program - for students grieving a loss.

We are happy to announce that the Rainbows program is again being offered at Sunnybrae! Rainbows peer support groups will be commencing in March for children at the school who have experienced death, divorce, or separation in their families. The program consists of weekly sessions with a trained staff facilitator where small groups of similar aged students share their feelings and learn about such issues as self, trust, family, and acceptance. Students will miss one class per week for the program.

Rainbows is not a counselling group but rather a place where children learn that they are not isolated in these feelings and that others, like them, are experiencing similar emotions. This program is most helpful when children have had about six months to deal with the most acute stage of loss. If any parent is interested in learning more about the program or thinks their child could benefit from the program, please let your child’s teacher know or contact Kerri McKay at [email protected] or Elizabeth Lawrence at [email protected]
