This Week at Sunnybrae PS – October 16 to 20, 2023
Principal’s Message:
We are excited to host our parade of costumes on Tues. Oct. 31st. Please ensure that your child does not bring any weapons or masks to school. In anticipation of Hallowe’en, the SCDSB has reminded us that dressing up for Halloween is fun and exciting but depending on our costume, it risks being offensive to other cultures. It is important not to inadvertently mimic culture by culturally appropriating racial, religious, or ethnic groups. Some critical equity questions to reflect on about costume choices are:
- Is the costume depicting and perpetuating a stereotype or stigma associated with a particular race, culture, or religion?
- Does the costume include a replication of a garment that is a significant component of a particular religion or culture with which the costume wearer does not identify with?
- Is the costume depicting a historical time period where that look/costume is now considered offensive and discriminatory?
- Does the costume represent elements of a culture or cultural practice being commoditized for consumption?
- Can a person look in the mirror and confidently say that the costume choice would not be considered offensive to a particular race, ethnic origin, gender or religion?

This week, our students represented our school proudly at both the Cross Country Meet and the Primary Fun Run. The students were respectful, encouraging of each other and put forth their best efforts. We are so proud of all our athletes!

- Oct. 18th: Cross country counties at Mount St. Louis (Students who advanced-permission form online)
- Oct. 19th: Regional Flag Football Tournament at Steele St. (Permission form online for players)
- Oct. 19th: Junior Girls Volleyball Game at Mapleview (after school)
- Oct. 19th: Junior Boys Volleyball Game at St. John Paul (after school)
- Oct. 20th: PA Day - No school

Bus Driver Appreciation Day
Wednesday, October 18, 2023, is School Bus Driver Appreciation Day in the province of Ontario. This is a
great opportunity for the school community to thank the bus drivers for all their hard work transporting our
students to and from school safely.
